Volunteer Spotlight: Ann Riddle

ann-riddleAnn started volunteering at Schoolhouse Supplies in 2004 as part of a Hands On Greater Portland book sorting project that puts books into the hands of students through the Free Store for Teachers.  She loved standing inside the giant boxes of books, and has been volunteering with us ever since!

Ann makes her greatest impact as a Pickup Partner (PUP).  When businesses have donations they can’t deliver, Ann picks them up and brings them back to Schoolhouse.  She also jumps at the opportunity to volunteer at an event or call donors to thank them for their contributions.  All of these efforts to support students and teachers are impressively done on top of her busy career as a teacher!

Ann explains what motivates her:

“I believe all students deserve to have the materials they need to learn.  As a special education teacher in East Multnomah County for the last 18 years, I’ve seen the effect of poverty on students’ readiness for learning, from access to basic living necessities like food and clothing to housing instability.  Schoolhouse  Supplies is a critical support for teachers in Portland, allowing increased access to vital school supplies for some of our most economically at-risk students.”

Ann, thank you for the impact you have made in almost ten years of service!  You are an absolute pleasure to work with.
