Thanks to the generosity of PEMCO Insurance, Schoolhouse Supplies offered two unique shopping opportunities to Portland teachers on April 8 and 9.
First, a pilot version of a “Mobile Free Store for Teachers” traveled to Lane Middle School in Southeast Portland. Teachers from Kelly, Whitman, Marysville, Woodmere, Lent, the Community Transition Program, and Lane’s SUN and Head Start programs all received school supplies to benefit the children in their classrooms. Collectively, just over 80% of students at these schools/programs qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 80 classrooms-worth of students were served.
The next day, the Free Store for Teachers hosted a Saturday Shopping Event. 49 teachers from 36 different schools stocked up on much-needed supplies for their students.
Teachers told us that Schoolhouse Supplies is a valuable resource and having access to free school supplies for their students “allows us to focus energy on teaching.” However, accessing the Free Store for Teachers isn’t always easy. A principal described the conundrum: teachers really want to take advantage of the Free Store, but “teachers come early, stay late, and can’t get to the Free Store. It’s a blessing to bring it to them. Our kids don’t have supplies – teachers buy supplies for them.”
These special Free Store opportunities save time and add convenience for teachers, which in turn benefits children in our community.
