Meet the Spellers: Howard Jay Patterson

HowTopCropHoward Jay Patterson was a founding member of the seminal juggling/musical/theatrical/comedy troupe The Flying Karamazov Brothers.

Despite his training in science and music rather than theater or physical comedy, he went on to perform around the world for over three decades at venues both humble and exalted, headlining with symphony orchestras and at international theatre festivals, with six runs on Broadway, an appearance on Seinfeld, a major motion picture (The Jewel of the Nile), and two performances at Carnegie Hall (playing Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto on the euphonium with the Cincinnati Orchestra). Through both the endless touring of his small company and also with many ambitious larger productions, he helped lay the groundwork for today’s alternative circus movement.

He mostly retired from The Show Business some years ago to work in environmental restoration – though he still leads the marching band at the Oregon Country Fair, The Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestra – but as he prepares his massive memoir for publication he is contemplating a minor return to Public Life.
