Get To Know The Spelling Bee Celebs – Volume 1

It’s your chance to get to know some of our Celebrity Spellers before they take the stage at the OnPoint Community Credit Union Celebrity Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 31st at the Portland Art Museum. Be sure to check back next week as we feature another group of this year’s brave luminaries!

Peter Zuckerman

peter-zuckerman-beeAuthor and award winning journalist Peter Zuckerman credits Ms. Palmer, his second grade language teacher, for exemplifying how great teachers can transform peoples’ lives and helping him learn to talk, read and write. Although his spelling confidence runs high, Peter hopes he will not have to spell the word “graffiti” at the Spelling Bee and believes that fellow celeb Reggie Aqui might be his biggest competition due to his “authoritative voice,” which he thinks may sway the judges. Learn more about Peter and his latest book; Buried in the Sky: The Extraordinary Story of the Sherpa Climbers on K2’s Deadliest Day at www.authorpeterzuckerman.com.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler

jeffery-m-bee-picJeffrey Morgenthaler is Bar Manager at Clyde Common and actually grew up wanting to be an architect.  Although he admits that French and Math were his favorite subjects when he was in school (and English not so much), he is itching to dethrone last year’s Celebrity Spelling Champ, Pat Janowski,  and represent for bartenders everywhere. You can find out more about Jeffery and his passion for mixology at www.jeffreymorgenthaler.com.

Chris McGowan

Chris_McGowan_Bee_2013Portland Trail Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan has had plenty of practice with basketball, but did you know when he was a kid he wanted to be a professional soccer player?  Chris counts his soccer coach and PE teacher, Mr. Meminger, as his most influential teacher, and perhaps that’s part of the reason that if he could teach one subject it would be health. He is excited to support a great cause and sharpen his spelling skills at this year’s Spelling Bee.

With the help of local businesses and the support of the community, the Onpoint Community Credit Union Spelling Bee has become one of Portland’s most anticipated events.  Click here to learn more and reserve your tickets today and stay tuned for more celeb spotlights to come!
