When the Free Store for Teachers opens again in September, teachers from the Parkrose and David Douglas School Districts will enjoy scheduled weeks on the calendar, just like Portland Public Schools teachers. This “geographic expansion,” as we’re calling it, is important. In Parkrose and David Douglas School Districts, the rates of children who qualify for free and reduced lunch is higher than in PPS (73% and 77% respectively, compared to 49%).
Many of you (volunteers, teachers, supporters, sponsors, and advocates) participated in the Open Forum discussions this Spring which helped shape the implementation of this decision. Thanks to that good thinking, we have been awarded several grants that partially fund Free Store operations this year. A very big thank you to Spirit Mountain Community Fund, Bank of America, Newman’s Own Foundation, Jackson Foundation, the H.W.Irwin & D.C.H.Irwin Foundation and over a thousand additional businesses, individuals and families.
We look forward to welcoming these new teachers to the Free Store this September and serving more students in need!
