Schoolhouse Supplies Launches New “Classroom Champions” Program
Bridging a Gap in Funding for Tools for Schools to Ensure Students Have the Tools to Succeed
Oregon-based Decipher, Inc. offering challenge grant to help meet the need
June 30, 2014 – Portland, Ore. – Schoolhouse Supplies, a nonprofit that supports public education by providing students and teachers free classroom supplies, launches new “Classroom Champions” program. Aimed at rallying support from small businesses and individuals in support of students in need, the program receives a challenge grant from Decipher, an international market research firm, to help launch the new fundraising campaign.
“During a time when more than 40% of children in our community are facing the realities of poverty, our ability to deliver on our commitment to support their learning through the donation of school supplies is even more important to us,” stated Jen Barth, executive director of Schoolhouse Supplies. “Support from Decipher to get the Classroom Champions program off the ground couldn’t come at a better time.”
Classroom Champions Program to Support High-Need Schools: Schoolhouse Supplies branches out from the twelve-year, “Tools for Schools” program to provide an avenue for smaller business and individuals to have an impact on their area schools in need. The new program hopes to bridge a funding gap and ensure that 100% of the student need is met at four high-need schools; Arleta, Rigler, Scott and Grout.
“Tools for Schools” Provides Backpacks to High-Need Portland Public Schools: Schoolhouse Supplies’ Tools for Schools program aims to send every Portland Public School child attending a school where 65% or more of the students live at, or below the poverty line to school with a backpack full of school supplies to support an entire year of learning. Teachers report that the program allows their students to begin the year on equal footing resulting in a classroom of students ready to learn. Classroom Champions will support schools that have not received a corporate sponsorship, but will still receive backpacks for every student.
Schoolhouse Supplies Receives Challenge Grant to Bridge the Gap: Oregon-based Decipher, Inc. is offering a challenge grant of $2,500 to bridge the gap and help kick-start Schoolhouse Supplies’ Classroom Champions Program. Aimed at joining small businesses and individuals together to ensure that Portland’s highest-need youth have the tools they need to succeed in school. With giving levels begin at $200, this generous match doubles the impact of gifts to the program.
“Giving back to the community has always been a vital part of our culture at Decipher,” said Kristin Luck, president and CMO of Decipher. “When we discovered this award-winning program that helps both kids and teachers get the supplies they need for a successful educational experience, we were on board! Being able to kick off their new fundraising program and challenge others to help out as well was a perfect fit.”
Become a Classroom Champion Schoolhouse Supplies has put together some suggested sponsorship levels for individuals and businesses to take advantage of Deciphers matching grant. For example, a $200 donation will supply 12 high-need students for the 2014-2015 school year, all the way up to a $2,500 donation supporting an entire grade level at a high-need school.
